Response of Paleogene Fine-Grained Clastic Rock Deposits in the South Qiangtang Basin to Environments and Thermal Events on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau

Abstract: The Chamdo Basin is a secondary basin in the eastern part of Tibet China and is one of the most promising of petroliferous basins for new petroleum exploration. The Qamdo Basin records a complex burial history from the Mesozoic to the Cenozoic; however, the poorly constrained sedimentology of Cenozoic strata in this basin has severely obscured the overall profile and impeded further explorations of oil and gas resources. Here, we conduct whole-rock geochemical analyses of major, trace, and rare earth elements … Show more

“…The mineral composition of volcanic materials is highly intricate and unstable, resulting in a wide variety of diagenetic products and complex postdiagenetic evolutionary pathways. , The types of diagenetic minerals vary and are closely linked to the compositional characteristics of the precursor volcanic materials. ,, Volcanic materials can be classified into acidic and intermediately basic categories based on the content of SiO 2 , (Na 2 O + K 2 O), and stability of the mineral components. Acidic volcanic materials exhibit high silica and low alkalinity, remaining relatively stable at the earth’s surface and under burial conditions. They resist dissolution and favor the transformation of minerals such as kaolinite, smectite, authigenic quartz, and illite. On the other hand, intermediately basic volcanic materials are characterized by low silica and high alkalinity, displaying lower chemical stability.…”

“…CIA and WIP have been extensively used to evaluate the weathering intensity of silicate rocks in the provenance area based on the proportions of alkali and alkaline earth elements in weathered products. Stronger chemical weathering results in higher CIA values and lower WIP values. , Generally, low CIA values (50–65) represent low chemical weathering intensity; values between 65 and 85 indicate moderate chemical weathering, whereas high CIA values (85–100) suggest a strong chemical weathering rate . Potassium metasomatism alteration may influence CIA values and can be evaluated by the Al 2 O 3 –CaO* + Na 2 O–K 2 O (A–CN–K) diagram .…”
