Response of Pinus pinaster Ait. provenances at early age to water supply. I. Water relation parameters

Abstract: -The seasonal evolution of tissue water relations was assessed in 1-year-old seedlings of four Pinus pinaster Ait. provenances growing in a nursery and subjected to two water supply regimes. Seedlings were also submitted to water stress cycles in a controlled environment chamber. Water relation parameters were deduced from pressure-volume curves. Significant differences were found between water supply regimes and measurement dates and sometimes among provenances. For the lowest water availability treatment, os… Show more

“…[18], in agreement with Tognetti et al on P. halepensis [35], although these last authors recorded higher values than were observed in our study. This difference may be due to the fact that we did not re-hydrate our samples or to the fact that the seedlings we examined were younger.…”

“…The reduction of Ψ π100 as the water potential of the substrate decreases has already been observed and has been considered a clear response to drought [18,35,36]. Five and a half month old control seedlings of three North American conifers (Picea mariana Mill., Picea glauca Moench, Pinus banksiana Lamb.)…”

“…On the other hand, under water shortage conditions (R2), the decrease of osmotic potential, bulk elasticity modulus and turgor to dry weight ratio previously reported [16] and the increase of intrinsic water use efficiency (A/g wv ) indicate strategies of acclimation to water stress, as it has been shown in some conifers [3,24,48,59].…”

“…After germination, seedlings were taken to open air under a translucid cover and sown in containers filled with 230 ml of a sand:black peat mixture (2:1 v/v). Air temperatures were recorded [16]. Seedlings were carefully watered twice a week for two months.…”
