Response of salt stressed barley seedlings to phenylurea

Abstract: The effect of phenylurea with reported cytokinin-like activities on seed germination, seedling growth, activities of antioxidant enzymes, polyphenol, peroxidase, indoleacetic acid oxidase, and total phenolic compounds, flavonoids was investigated in stressed barley seedlings. The application of phenylurea decreases the activity of peroxidase, indoleacetic acid oxidase and increases the activity of polyphenol oxidase with decrease in total phenolic compounds and flavonoids and consequent increase in growth rate… Show more

“…The K + and Ca 2+ concentrations in leaf were maintained or increased under OM treatments (Table 3). Our results are also in agreement with Ali and Abbas (2003) and Muhammad and Khattak (2011), that OM increases the amount of soluble Ca 2+ for soil reclamation. Application of a combination of OM and mineral fertilizer may induce an increase in the humus content, nitrogen, and available phosphorus and potassium levels (Gondek and Filipek-Mazur, 2005).…”

“…From this point of view, our upshots are in accordance with the related studies. Reportedly, salt stress increases the polyphenolic compounds in Zea mays 17) , flavonoids in Hordeum vulgare, 18) phenolic contents in Cuminum cyminum, 19) menthone in Mentha pulegium 20) , and alkaloids in Catharanthus roseus.…”

“…Yet, the high concentration of reduction equivalents also leads to a stronger rate of synthesis of highly reduced compounds, i.e. isoprenoids, phenols or alkaloids (Selmar 2008, de Abreu andMazzafera 2005;Ali and Abbas 2003;Gray et al 2003, Kennedy andDe Filippis 1999). In case of silymarin, medium supplementation with different concentrations of NaCl had shown significant effect on its accumulation, total silymarin concentration reach to 1.808 % % dry weight.…”
