Chondrodonta is an opportunistic, oyster-like bivalve, common in shallowwater carbonates of the Cretaceous Tethyan Realm. Despite its high abundance and widespread geographic distribution, the precise relationship between the early Aptian proliferation and environmental perturbations resulting from the Oceanic Anoxic Event 1a (OAE1a), has not been investigated. Stratigraphic and geochemical analyses of the lower Aptian Chondrodonta bedsets within the inner platform limestones of the Apulia Carbonate Platform (Gargano Promontory, southern Italy) are conducted to assess the environmental controls on the Chondrodonta proliferation and its timing and causal relationship to OAE1a. Chondrodonta occurs with sparse to common individuals within requieniid rudist floatstone-rudstones, forms monospecific biostromes during the early phase of stressed environmental conditions and then rapidly disappears at the peak of OAE1a. It proliferates in dysoxic seawater with relatively increased trophic sources, which correlate to increasing nutrient levels in the nearby pelagic realm. Chondrodontarich beds are associated worldwide with the onset of OAE1a and occur in a transitional context between a stable and a strongly stressed environment, where the opportunistic behaviour of Chondrodonta is rather efficient. Increasing nutrient load and unstable environmental conditions right below the peak of OAE1a created an environmental 'window' favourable for Chondrodonta to proliferate, outplaying the less tolerant benthos (for example, rudists). The occurrence, duration and position of the environmental window were controlled by local palaeogeographic and hydrodynamic settings (i.e. low energy, decreased seawater oxygenation and circulation). Further increase in inhospitable conditions, leading to OAE1a, constituted an upper threshold for Chondrodonta and allowed mesotrophic taxa like Bacinella-Lithocodium and orbitolinids to dominate the benthic 3191

The Salina Cruz and Puerto Ángel beach areas in the Gulf of Tehuantepec, Mexican Pacific coast represent an important economic sector of the region. In this study, the mineralogy and geochemistry of bulk sediments, and geochronology of 400 detrital zircons recovered from the beach sediments were analysed to investigate their origin. The sediments are abundant in quartz, feldspar, ilmenite, cordierite, aragonite and anorthite. The chemical index of weathering revealed a moderate to intense weathering in the source area. The chondrite normalized REE patterns of bulk sediments are similar to the found in the Upper Continental Crust, suggesting the derivation of sediments from felsic igneous rocks. The REE patterns of zircons and the trace elemental ratios reveal a continental crust origin. Zircon U–Pb ages in the Salina Cruz beach were represented by Proterozoic (~545.1–1314.1 Ma; n = 170) and Cenozoic (~0.01–66 Ma; n = 20). The Puerto Ángel beach was abundant in Proterozoic zircon grains (~600.9–1171.4 Ma; n = 109) and followed by Mesozoic grains (~73.78–246.9 Ma; n = 40). The comparison of zircon U–Pb ages of this study with probable source rocks reveals that the Oaxaquia Terrane and Chiapas Massif Complex were the major contributors of Proterozoic zircons to the coastal areas. Similarly, the results indicate that the Cenozoic zircons were contributed by the Chiapas Massif Complex, coastal batholith and Cuicateco Terrane. The Mesozoic zircons are very few, derived from the nearby Xolapa Complex and the Chuacús Terrane.

This study is based on stable isotope analysis of a rich ammonite assemblage from the Sogukcam Formation, which is widely exposed in Yesilbaglar (Olur‐Erzurum, NE Türkiye). The presence of ammonid, planktic, and benthic foraminifers in the marine sediments suggests that they are from the early Cretaceous period. The late Valanginian‐early Aptian‐rich ammonite assemblage includes the following genera and species: Acrioceras sp., Barremites difficilis, Barremites sp., Crioceratites duvalii, Crioceratites sp., Deshayesites aff. dechyi, Deshayesites sp.1, Deshayesites sp.2, Deshayesites sp.3, Deshayesites sp., Dufrenoyia cf. dufrenoyi, Dufrenoyia cf. furcata, Dufrenoyia sp., Hemihoplites sp., Heteroceras sp., Neocomites sp., Phyllopachyceras infundibulum, Protetragonites cf. quadrisulcatus, Protetragonites sp., Ptychoceras sp., Turkmeniceras cf. geokerense, and Turkmeniceras sp. This assemblage suggests that the Sogukcam Formation's deeper facies formed in the late Valanginian to early Aptian period. Fossils and δ18O data show normal paleosalinity levels. During the late Valanginian‐early Aptian period, δ18O values ranged from −3.67‰ to −2.24‰, with paleotemperatures ranging from 21.3°C to 27.9°C. δ13C positive values range from +0.65‰ to +2.86‰. δ13C isotope data show the oxygen minimum zone (OMZ) and changes in sea level and productivity. The presence of planktonic foraminifera and the ammonite assemblage indicates that the formation was deposited in warm subtropical waters ranging from the outer shelf to the open sea.
