Each subject described a person he knew well by responding to items adapted from Jackson's Personality Research Form. He then indicated whether, in responding, he had felt uncertain of his response, had found the item ambiguous or difficult to apply, etc. The closeness of each item to each described person was computed in terms of the Rasch model. Correlations between closeness and presence of each inappropriate response component were computed for each subject on each of two scales. Most of the proportions of positive correlations were significant, as in previous studies of closeness and inappropriate response processes in self-descriptions, suggesting that similar processes are involved in describing self and others.LITTLE is known about the processes that occur in persons when they are describing others. This study investigated these processes during subjects' descriptions of others in terms of responses to dichotomous-choice items from an instrument originally developed to measure personality traits of respondents. The primary objective was to determine whether these processes would be like those observed in responding to self-report instruments. Kuncel (1973) and Kuncel and Fiske (1974) have identified inappropriate components in response processes during self-descriptions and have found the occurrence of these components to be related to the relative proximity of the item and subject points on an underlying trait continuum.

This study describes the relation between personality items' validities, defined as the items' correlations with acquaintance ratings on the Big 5 personality factors, and other itemmetric properties including ambiguity, syntactic complexity, social desirability, content, and trait indicativity. Five external validity coefficients for each item on the California Psychological Inventory were correlated with a number of itemmetric variables often assumed to affect item validity. Item validity correlated positively with social desirability and trait indicativity and negatively with ambiguity across the five factors. Other characteristics had a more limited influence on item validity. Multiple regression analyses revealed trait indicativity -how obviously an item response indicates a trait -to be the most important determinant of item validity. Scales built from itemmetrically sound versus poor items showed differential validity in two additional samples. Implications for the psychological processes underlying responses to personality items are discussed.

Response Latency Measures for Biographical Inventories

This study assessed the usefulness of response latency data for biographical inventory items in enhancing the inventory's validity. The Armed Services Applicant Profile (ASAP) was computer administered to Navy recruits, and the regular score, latency‐weighted scores, and measures of deviant latencies were obtained. The latency‐weighted scores did not improve the ASAP's validity in predicting six‐month retention, when used instead of or in addition to the regular score, and the deviant latency measures did not function as suppressor or moderator variables to increase the ASAP's validity. But subgroups of items with differing latencies varied systematically in their internal‐consistency reliability (with increased reliability for subgroups with shorter latencies), and a small subgroup of items with moderate latencies was almost as valid as the regular score, suggesting that latency data may be useful in writing and selecting inventory items.
