Response rate and predictors of response in a short‐term empirical trial of high‐dose rabeprazole in patients with globus

Abstract: SUMMARY BackgroundAlthough the aetiology of globus (the sensation of a lump in the throat) remains unclear, gastro-oesophageal reflux disease is associated with globus. A short-term trial with a high-dose proton pump inhibitor has been shown to be a sensitive tool for diagnosing gastro-oesophageal reflux disease.

“…These results are in compliance with Hp prevalence studies conducted in Turkey (prevalence of Hp in Turkey is between 48% and 68%) (16,17). The correlation between globus hystericus and GERD was investigated in previous studies, but the exact cause was not fully explained (3,18). Sinn et al (18) showed that GERD symptoms were positive in 64% of cases with symptoms of globus.…”

“…In our study, the reflux symptoms were positive in 32 (26%) of the cases with symptoms of GS. This result was lower than in the study by Sinn et al (18), but it complies with results of epidemiological reflux studies conducted in our country (16,17). In the present study, PPI (30 mg/day) was administered to Hp(-) cases with dyspepsia and/or reflux symptoms (endoscopic, clinic).…”

“…However, the effectiveness of hangekobokuto in patients who were prescribed ICS/LABA simultaneously to hangekobokuto could not be estimated due to the small number of patients, although ICS/LABA was not a predictive factor of the response to hangekobokuto on SLT in the multiple regression analysis (Table III). Second, certain previous studies have suggested that GERD may be a major factor of SLT (7,8). By contrast, other studies did not support GERD as an etiology of SLT (9).…”

“…The etiology of SLT appears to be multifactorial, and the psychological characteristics, stress and pressure of a psychiatric disorder may be significant factors in SLT (5). In addition, certain studies suggested that bronchial asthma (6), and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) may be major factors of SLT (7,8). Hangekobokuto (Tsumura Co., Tokyo, Japan), one of the traditional herbal medicines that has been developed by Zhang Zhongjing, a well-known physician of traditional Chinese medicine in the third century, is known as an effective drug on SLT in North-East Asia (9).…”
