The diversity of functional traits of macroinvertebrates in freshwater ecosystems is one of the current research hotspots in the field of biodiversity. Understanding the functional trait composition of macroinvertebrates and their factors can make the study of watershed beta diversity and river ecological security patterns more effective. Based on two field surveys conducted in September 2020 and July 2021 in the Qingyijiang (QYJ) River, the longest tributary on the south bank of the lower Yangtze River in China, we explored the functional trait compositions of macroinvertebrates and relationships between functional traits and water environment factors using functional diversity indices, beta diversity decomposition, R‐mode linked to Q‐mode, and fourth‐corner analysis methods. Our results showed that water environmental factors affected the distribution of macroinvertebrates traits, and the degree of effect was reflected by the correlation between water environmental factors and the abundance of species traits. Physical factors like flow velocity and water depth were significantly correlated with biological traits of species such as body size and swimming ability. In counterparts, some nutrient indicators significantly affected species ecological traits, such as total phosphorus, ammonia nitrogen, and chemical oxygen demand, which affected species habits and functional feeding group traits. At the same time, we also found a high turnover rate between communities in the river, reflecting the strong dispersal ability of the species. This will be an important guide for the conservation of macroinvertebrates diversity in the river. Local governments can take measures such as conducting quarterly monitoring of macroinvertebrates species; restoring riparian vegetation; limiting hardening of riverbanks and dredging of rivers; controlling wastewater discharges from residential areas on both sides of the river; controlling the use of pesticides in agricultural lands, and so on. These will become the key directions for the conservation of macroinvertebrates diversity.

Habitat fragmentation is emerging as a leading cause of biodiversity decline in riverine ecosystems. Several natural and human factors contribute to the fragmentation of rivers. River fragmentation is a growing problem that is widely spread and poses a significant challenge to the conservation of freshwater biodiversity, but its impact is not fully documented and acknowledged. Fragmentation impedes the movement of aquatic organisms and alters natural flow regimes, disrupting habitats and trophic supplies for aquatic biodiversity. It can also affect the adaptive ability of organisms to natural environmental changes, leading to a change in the structure and function of biotic communities. To understand the effects of fragmentation on river ecology, it is crucial to link its spatial and structural implications. This article examines the occurrence and frequency of fragmentation and its effects on the ecological community of benthic biota. This review aims to elucidate the overall effects of fragmentation on river ecology and recommends the possible measures to mitigate its impact. Urgent action is required to establish a comprehensive global network of free‐flowing river systems and revive previously exploited rivers in different regions to enhance the protection and sustainable utilization of river ecosystems.

The impact of two high‐head dams on macroinvertebrate communities within the regulated reaches of the Wujiang River in China was explored, using longitudinal monitoring data spanning from 2006 to 2016. In this study, we set up 10 sampling sites categorized into four areas based on different stressors and defined three stages based on the timeline of dam construction. Our findings revealed significant changes in community composition before and after dam impoundment. While certain original dominant taxa, such as Rivularia globosa and Lithoglyphopsis ovatus, remained dominant throughout the stages, mayflies and caddisflies nearly vanished in the downstream reaches of the dams. This trend was accompanied by the disappearance of taxa with low adaptability and the emergence of tolerant taxa downstream of the dams. Additionally, typical limnological taxa colonized the inundated reaches. Dam impoundment affected not only macroinvertebrate community composition but also diversity. In this study, the recovery effect of communities downstream of dams was not observed due to the limited distance, but the presence of Wujiangdu Dam upstream of the two dams for over 20 years makes us believe that in a large river system, macroinvertebrate communities downstream of high‐head dams may fully recover if the distance from the dams is long enough. The original and vulnerable species R. globosa, which demonstrated remarkable adaptability and thrived downstream of dams, should be further studied in the future.
