Responses of summertime extreme wave heights to local climate variations in the East China Sea

Abstract: We detected the responses of summertime extreme wave heights (Htop10, average of the highest 10% of significant wave heights in June, July and August) to local climate variations in the East China Sea by applying an empirical orthogonal function analysis to Htop10 derived from the WAVEWATCH‐III wave model driven by 6 hourly sea surface wind fields from ERA‐40 reanalysis over the period 1958–2002. Decreases in Htop10 in the northern East China Sea (Yellow Sea) correspond to attenuation of the East Asian Summer … Show more

“…Emanuel (2005) showed that, since the mid-1970s, tropical cyclones have become increasingly destructive because of longer storm duration and greater intensity. Sasaki et al (2005) and Yong et al (2008) indicated that summertime extreme wave heights have increased in the western North Pacific during recent years resulting from intense tropical cyclones. Furthermore, extreme hurricane-generated waves in the western North Atlantic have also increased (Komar and Allan 2008;Bromirski and Kossin 2008), and Moore et al (2013) concluded that coastline changes to the U.S. East Coast were attributed to changes in hurricane-generated waves.…”

“…[6] Spectral wave models are categorized by their primary region of application, i.e., deep water (DW) models such as WAve Modelling (WAM) [WAMDI Group, 1988] and WAVEWATCH-III [Tolman, 1991;Huang et al, 2008], and Shallow Water (SW) models such as Simulating WAves Nearshore (SWAN) [Booij et al, 1999]. Whereas it is generally accepted that DW models are usually more efficient, it would be challenging for DW models to perform as good in shallow waters as SW models because SW models include additional physics representative of the shallow water environment.…”
