Responsible family ownership in small‐ and medium‐sized family enterprises: an exploratory study

Abstract: The concept of responsible ownership was originally developed with reference to large, publicly held firms. However, the relevance of small-and medium-sized closely held firms, such as family firms, in all economies and the specific governance and organisational characteristics of these firms require further examination of the responsible ownership concept and its operationalisation. Based on the existing literature, we define the construct of responsible family ownership to fill this gap in responsible owners… Show more

“…Indeed, many studies have focused on the determinants of CSR, seeking to explain why some companies are more socially responsible than others. One such determinant is ownership (Dam & Scholtens ; Li, Luo, Wang, & Wu, ; Li & Zhang, ; Oh, Chang, & Martynov, ), especially family ownership (Aragón‐Amonarriz & Iturrioz‐Landart, ; Berrone, Cruz, Gómez‐Mejía, & Larraza‐Kintana, ; Déniz & Cabrera, ).…”

“…Organizational values and the personal values of managers and owners—which the resource‐based view considers to be intangible resources—play a fundamental role in the adoption of sustainability agendas by firms (Aragón Amonarriz & Iturrioz Landart, ; Eweje, ; Tang et al, ; Testa, Gusmerottia, Corsini, Passetti E & Iraldo, ; Tinnish & Lynch, ; Tzschenke et al, ). The personal values of owners and top managers can be significant not only during the allocation of resources (Eweje, ; Tang et al, ; Tinnish & Lynch, ; Tzschenke et al, ) but also during a firm's interface with external institutional pressures (Jain & Jamali, ).…”

“…The notion of responsible ownership has come to include attitudes and behaviours (including decisions and actions) by one or more members of the owning group, which contribute positively to one or more stakeholders (including other owners, the business itself, the owners' family, employees, and others outside the firm), without harming the other stakeholders (Uhlaner, 2016). The responsible owner must go beyond his or her own interests to consider those of other owners, the business and, typically, external stakeholders (Aragón Amonarriz and Iturrioz Landart, 2016;Berent-Braun and Uhlaner 2012;Koeberle-Schmid et al, 2014;Lambrecht and Uhlaner, 2005;Uhlaner, 2016).…”
