Responsive molecular liquid materials

Abstract: This review focuses on solvent‐free molecular liquid materials that exhibit changes in response to stimuli. Along with the recent development of soft functional materials, research on functional liquids possessing free deformability and ease of molding is becoming a new trend. A typical method for designing functional molecular liquids (FMLs) introduces flexible alkyl side‐chains around a π‐conjugation unit at the center of the molecule. As a result, the aggregation between π‐conjugated units is inhibited, and… Show more

“…Molecular machines are able to change their own light, or luminescence when they are set in motion, due to the coupling of mechanical motion and electronic properties of the molecules [100] . Some molecular machines are designed to switch between different states, which can be accompanied by changes in luminescence, allowing changes in the state of molecular machines to be measured and monitored [101,102] . Important changes in luminescence include wavelength and CPL.…”

“…While the recent advancements in SOLs are fascinating, , it is essential to appropriately address their current limitations, including surface stickiness and the potential irreversibility of film curing. To overcome these challenges while preserving the physical and photophysical attributes of SOLs, one promising approach is the creation of luminescent polymer films through the design of polymerizable SOLs (P-SOL).…”

“…Solid glasses and crystals , composed of small organic molecules have attracted attention as functional materials. Recently, molecular liquids have begun to receive interest as functional materials as well. There are two ways in which a molecule can exist in the liquid phase at room temperature. First, it can exist as a thermodynamically stable liquid with its melting temperature T m < 25 °C.…”
