Restfulness from sleep and subsequent cardiovascular disease in the general population

Abstract: We aimed to clarify the association between restfulness from sleep and subsequent risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD). Medical records of 1,980,476 individuals with neither prior history of CVD nor sleep disorders were extracted from the Japan Medical Data Center. Restfulness from sleep was subjectively assessed using information from the questionnaires at initial health check-ups. The mean age was 45 ± 11 years and 1,184,937 individuals were men. Overall, 1,197,720 individuals (60.5%) reported having good re… Show more

“…Medical records from patients in Japan (N=1 980 476) were examined to determine whether restful sleep (yes/no) was associated with incident CVD over an average of 1122 days. 38 Restful sleep was associated with lower risk of MI (HR, 0.89 [95% CI, 0.82–0.96]), AP (HR, 0.85 [95% CI, 0.83–0.87]), stroke (HR, 0.86 [95% CI, 0.83–0.90]), HF (HR 0.86 [95% CI, 0.83–0.88]), and AF (HR, 0.93 [95% CI, 0.88–0.98]).…”

“…Restful sleep was assessed with the question, “Do you have a good rest with sleep?” Restful sleep, defined by answering “yes,” was associated with lower risk of MI (HR, 0.89 [95% CI, 0.82–0.96]), AP (HR, 0.85 [95% CI, 0.83–0.87]), stroke (HR, 0.86 [95% CI, 0.83–0.90]), HF (HR, 0.86 [95% CI, 0.83–0.88]), and AF (HR, 0.93 [95% CI, 0.88–0.98]) compared with nonrestful sleep (answering “no”). 42…”

“…In contrast, the association between dyslipidemia and dietary and eating patterns is still unclear. Elevated levels of lowdensity lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) has been known for developing CVD and stroke [24][25][26] . Especially, small dense LDL (sdLDL), a smaller and denser subfraction of LDL, has been known as more atherogenic lipoprotein particles, and serum sdLDLcholesterol (sdLDL-C) concentration has been reported to be a more sensitive risk marker for CVD than serum LDL-C concentration [27][28][29][30][31] .…”
