Resting Metabolic Rate of Elderly Vietnamese

Abstract: Background/Aims: To evaluate the FAO/WHO/UNU equations for predicting resting metabolic rate (RMR) in elderly Vietnamese. Methods: A cross-sectional study involving healthy and elderly subjects was carried out at the Basic Nutrition Department, National Institute of Nutrition, Vietnam. A total of 75 subjects who had a normal body mass index (BMI) were divided into two groups according to sex. The RMR was measured by indirect calorimetry and anthropometric indices were recorded. “…Besides the gold standard IC, there are alternative methods for estimating BEE such as BI, HBE and MSJ. Clinical use of HBE has been debated 5 , 8 - 9 , 13 , 15 , 19 , 22 . A study analyzing healthy subjects aged 18-30 years, using the HBE underestimated the BEE in 2.91% for female and 6.61% for male (p<0.05) 4 .…”

“…Mean BMI of participants ranged from 22.2 to 27.7 kg/m 2 (Table 1). In the study by Nhung et al [30] subjects had a BMI 18.5e24.9 kg/m 2 , whereas in the others papers, BMI showed a huge variability, varying from normal weight to overweight/obesity or even severe obesity [15,19,27]. In other words, elderly subjects with normal-weight, overweight and obesity were included in most study samples.…”

“…En general, son numerosas las investigaciones que concluyen que, dados los resultados de las fórmulas predictivas actuales para con estos individuos, es necesaria la utilización de la calorimetría indirecta (113)(114)(115)(116)(117)(118)(119) .…”
