“…This converges with other findings suggesting that psychosocial stress has a causal link to the impaired wound healing associated with it (Padgett, Marucha et al 1998;Detillion, Craft et al 2004;Sheridan, Padgett et al 2004;Glasper and Devries 2005;Horan, Quan et al 2005;Eijkelkamp, Engeland et al 2007). …”

“…In addition, isolation rearing has been found to impair wound healing (Detillion, Craft et al 2004;Glasper and Devries 2005). Other animal models of psychological stress, particularly restraint stress, impair wound healing (Padgett, Marucha et al 1998;Sheridan, Padgett et al 2004;Horan, Quan et al 2005;Eijkelkamp, Engeland et al 2007), although interestingly, the social intruder model of stress did not affect wound healing (Sheridan, Padgett et al 2004). …”

“…Endotoxin injection on as few as two occasions in the first week of life has been shown to exacerbate responses to stress much later in the mature animal, including HPA axis activation indicators (Hodgson et al, 2000;Shanks, Larocque, & Meaney, 1995), stressinduced suppression of lymphocyte proliferative responses (Shanks et al, 2000), and increased susceptibility to the metastasis of NK-sensitive MADB106 tumor cells (Hodgson et al, 2000). Neonatal endotoxin injection in rats has also been shown to result in delayed wound healing in the mature animal (Hodgson et al, 2000), which reflects the animals' inability to mount an inflammatory response (Padgett, Marucha, & Sheridan, 1998). The results are consistent with the findings of Shanks and colleagues (2000) that neonatal endotoxin-treated animals did not exhibit the expected increase in paw volume following induction of adjuvant arthritis.…”

“…Although the antiinflammatory activity of Gc, especially at pharmacological levels, may help reduce inflammatory reactions and thus avert tissue damage, prolonged Gc exposure can lead to a variety of unwanted side effects, including immunosuppression (2,3). Indeed, both exogenous (4) and endogenous (5) Gc have immunosuppressive effects, including inhibition of MHC class II expression (6), disruption of Th1/Th2 balance (7), and increased susceptibility to infection during wound healing (8,9).…”
