Results and complications of hydrophobic acrylic vs PMMA posterior chamber lenses in children under 17 years of age

Abstract: Implantation of hydrophobic acrylic intraocular lenses in the capsular bag in children may be associated with less postoperative complications compared with implantation of PMMA lenses. This appears also to be true in children under age 6 years. The visual results seem comparable and correspond mainly to the underlying ocular pathology.

“…There are studies on the use of PMMA lenses in pediatric cataract surgeries with postoperative outcomes comparable with the foldable acrylic lenses. 16 When using PMMA lenses, the wound size needs to be large. So there is chance of induced astigmatism.…”

“…The rate of PCO necessitating YAG capsulotomy was lower in Acrylic group than in PMMA, but the difference did not reach statistical Significance. 12 Mahamoud -Reza Panahi-Bazaz et al conducted a randomized clinical trial comparing primary implantation of foldable hydrophilic Acrylic with PMMA IOLs in paediatric cataract. Visual axis remained completely clear and visual outcomes were generally favorable and comparable in study groups.…”

“…In a study by Kü chle et al, 13 postoperative fibrin formation was less frequent in eyes with an acrylic IOL (1 of 10) than in eyes with a PMMA IOL (9 of 20). Aasuri et al 25 report increased uveal inflammation in 6 (26.1%) of 23 eyes with a PMMA IOL and in no eye with an acrylic IOL.…”

“…Proliferative VAO progresses more slowly, is less visually significant, and requires secondary intervention less often. 22 In a retrospective study, Kü chle et al 13 compared the outcomes of PMMA IOL and hydrophobic acrylic IOL implantation in children. The age at surgery was not significantly different between the 2 groups (P Z .84), although the follow-up was significantly longer in the PMMA group (P Z .03).…”
