“…The effects of the nyctohemeral rhythm in the levels of SAMe on the biosynthesis of the indolealkyamines 5-hydroxy-N,N-dimethyltryptamine, 5-methoxy-N,Ndimethyltryptamine, andN,N-dime thyltryptamine within the pineal gland are at present unknown . These compounds are of particular interest (Sitaram and McLeod, 1990) because they have been detected in human body fluids (Raisenen and Karkkainen, 1979;Sitaram et al, 1983;Karkkainen et al, 1988) and are implicated in the ability of exogenously administered SAMe (and its precursor methionine) to exacerbate schizophrenic symptoms (Cohen et al, 1974;Agnoli et al, 1978) and to induce states ofhypomania (Carney et al, 1988) . Because of the presence of high concentrations of SAMe, 5-HT, and 5-methoxytryptamine, the pineal gland has been suggested as a potential site for the synthesis of the psychotomimetic indolealkylamines (Guchhait, 1976;Hardeland et al, 1993) .…”
