Results of a 3-Year Study of Two Methods of Delivery of Life Skills Training

Abstract: Model programs and standards for substance abuse prevention have been identified by a number of federal agencies. The study reported here assessed two methods of delivery of one such program, Life Skills Training (LST), implemented in nine rural disadvantaged school districts. The results indicate that neither standard LST nor an infused LST delivery method was found effective for the entire sample, although some encouraging results were found for the females in the study. “…Since conflict of interest is an important issue it deserves further empirical analysis, especially in light of the emphasis now placed on the identification and dissemination of evidenced-based interventions in the field of drug and violence 2 It should be noted that a number of the independent evaluations of the SAMHSA model programs examined herein found little evidence of program effectiveness (e.g., Bauer et al, 2007;Hallfors et al, 2006;Harrington t al., 2001;Orpinas et al, 2000;St. Pierre et al, 2005;Vicary et al, 2006). Thus, the results of these studies are at odds with those conducted by the program developers.…”
