“…More information is known about the influence of moon phase on the migration of top predators (Neves Dos Santos & Garcia, 2005;Damalas et al, 2007). Hernandez-Milian et al (2008) showed significant positive relationships between moon phase and sightings of short-beaked common dolphin (Delphinus delphis, Linnaeus, 1758) and Atlantic spotted dolphin (Stenella frontalis, Cuvier, 1829) in the Azores. Although previous studies suggest that moon phase is likely to be important in determining behaviour of the many delphinid species that forage on vertically migrating prey (Hernandez-Milian et al, 2008;Benoit-Bird et al, 2009), our results show that the lunar phase is not correlated with dolphin interaction in these waters.…”

“…Fish damage caused by dolphins can be distinguished from damage caused by sea turtles since dolphins bite behind the gills, leaving bite marks with ragged borders and often leaving behind just the head or the body of the fish (Fig. 1), whereas sea turtles leave different small bites on the fish (Hernandez-Milian et al, 2008). The fish species caught in the nets were identified, measured and weighed for each haul.…”

“…Depredation and bycatch (accidental capture) are both negative interactions between fisheries and toothed whales, and can occur simultaneously, bycatch sometimes coinciding with fish damage (Hernandez-Milian et al, 2008). Similar measures are therefore used to mitigate both of them, and most research are currently focusing on the use of active acoustic deterrents (McPherson and Nishida, 2010;McPherson et al, 2007McPherson et al, , 2008.…”

“…Attacks on surfers in Recife (Brazil), for example, are much more common during new and full moons than during first and last quarters (Hazin et al 2008). Moon phase also appears to have an important effect on shark catches in Atlantic waters (Hernandez-Milian et al 2008) in the Pacific (Pallares andGarcia-Mamolar 1985, Bigelow et al 1999) and the Mediterranean (Damalas et al 2007). While most of these studies analyse the effect of the different phases of the moon on individual species, our results show that the effect of the moon can (1) be even at a day scale, (2) affect groups of species from the same taxonomical group, and (3) be related to other factors such as the kind of habitat.…”
