Results of arthroscopic debridement for osteochondritis dissecans of the elbow

Abstract: Objective: To determine the clinical outcome of arthroscopic debridement for osteochondritis dissecans of the elbow. Methods: A prospective cohort study was started in 2000; between 2000 and 2005, 15 patients (six male, nine female, mean age 28 years (range 16-49)) were treated for osteochondritis dissecans of the elbow with arthroscopic debridement. The lesion was graded during surgery using the classification of Baumgarten. The dominant side was operated on in seven of 15 patients, and all patients were invo… Show more

“…The results reported in literature are extremely encouraging [10,18,20,21,25] allowing an increase ROM in both degenerative and post-traumatic cases. We obtained a quite satisfactory improved MEPI concerning the post-operative average 58 months follow up.…”

“…7 Arthroscopic debridement and bone marrow stimulation have yielded good short-term results in reduction of pain, improved range of motion, patient satisfaction, and return to sports. 7,8 Rahusen et al 9 found that 12 of 15 patients with unstable lesions returned to sports after arthroscopic debridement and abrasion chondroplasty. Ruch et al 10 found that all patients had pain relief and no limitations at 3.2 years' follow-up and that lesion size did not correlate with postoperative symptoms.…”

“…Most data would support good to excellent outcomes with debridement and marrow stimulation procedures with 80-90% returning to preinjury level of play [35,32,56]. However, results appear to deteriorate in larger lesions with advanced stage.…”
