Results of high latitude trials of modern marine compasses

Abstract: This paper presents the results of the trials of master compasses: Vega·M Geus-M Meridian, and satellite compass MRK-ll received in the course of three cruises to the North Pole of the atomic ice-breaker ''YamaIn in the summer of 2003. Methods of gyrocompass accuracy evaluation and some practical recommendations useful for operation in polar waters are given.

“…Based on this result, we suggest that not only the multiple-target identification task but also the knowledge about the seriousness of lesions can be important to improve the performance in medical image reading. Experts have more visual knowledge in their expert domain than novices in a medical screening (Evans et al, 2011a), or an airport security screening (Schwaninger et al, 2005). Thus, to obtain expert knowledge can generally be effective to improve the visual search performance, especially the visual search for rare targets, in the expert domain.…”

“…For example, there are professional proofreaders (Asano et al, 2008), chess masters (Chase and Simon, 1973), aviation security screeners (Schwaninger et al, 2005), and so on. Among them, we focused on radiologists (i.e., experts for medical image reading).…”

“…in the polar region are obviously different from those in the middle and low latitudes, the economic and political costs of carrying out actual polar navigation experiments are relatively high [17,18]. Only some countries and companies have the conditions to conduct polar navigation test directly [19][20][21][22].…”

“…Information about gyrocompass alignment for its accuracy evaluations and practical usages was given in Ref. [10]. Yan et al [11] used the reverse navigation algorithm to get a fast gyrocompass alignment, gave the attitude updating process in backward scheme, and then derived the reciprocating process for gyrocompass alignment.…”
