Results of Periodontal Treatment Related to Pocket Depth and Attachment Level. Eight Years

Abstract: In previous papers we have reported longitudinal results of periodontal treatment based on mean values for all treated teeth,1,2 and analysis based on mean values from the half mouths of patients.3 These methods of analysis, however, did not reveal specifically what happened over time to pockets of various depth and attachment levels.

“…These findings are in agreement with previous studies showing a slight disease progression during the first years following ATP (Knowles et al. 1979, Preshaw & Heasman 2005). These longitudinal trends of treatment progression might reflect lack of compliance from highly susceptible patients during the first years of SPT.…”

“…Por otro lado, estos mismos autores (29) revisando los estudios precedentes (13,15,28) reevaluaron la importancia de la PB inicial en relación a la capacidad de desbridamiento no quirúrgico, que parece ser más complicado de realizar en bolsas más profundas y, según lo hipotetizado por estos autores, lo que pudiera ocasionar una recurrencia de la enfermedad en menos tiempo.…”

“…Having done this, a periodontal maintenance is necessary to prevent periodontal pockets from re-colonisation. In the '80s, the role played by patients' self-performed plaque control was extensively studied; oral disinfection procedures proved to be helpful in improving probing depth (PD), bleeding on probing (BoP) and clinical attachment level, whose effects were observed over a long time period after the initial oral hygiene session (Lindhe et al, 1984;Knowles et al, 1979;Badersten et al, 1987). Subsequently, a number of periodontal maintenance procedures were developed in the following years (Position Paper, 2003).…”
