Results of the UK Captain Field Interwell EOR Pilot

Abstract: An enhanced oil recovery (EOR) pilot was conducted by Chevron North Sea Limited ("Chevron") at the Captain Field in the UK North Sea between 2011 and 2013. Results from the polymer injection are presented along with an assessment of incremental oil recovery. The polymer solution was selected and qualified using a combination of laboratory and yard tests to determine optimum specifications for injection. The selected polymer was initially tested in an injectivity test in 2010, followed by continu… Show more

“…This implies 9 years shorter OPEX and CO 2 emissions to land on the same recovery and a lower cost. Similar acceleration was observed in the Captain filed (Poulsen et al, 2018).…”

“…The polymer form (powder, emulsion or concentrated liquid form for biopolymers) is prepared based on the specifications of site location, the logistical provisions and the footprint of the dissolution procedure [ 81 ]. For instance, the emulsion polymer was chosen for Captain and Schiehallion fields in the North Sea owing to the perilous weather conditions and the practical constraints of handling polymer [ 82 , 83 ].…”

“…Several of the recent polymer flood projects are conducted in reservoirs characterized by a permeability value of 1 Darcy and above. These include Captain in the U.K., Dalia in Angola, Milne Point in Alaska, Tambaredjo in Suriname, Pelican Lake in Canada, Mooney in Canada, , and Seal in Canada. , Polymer flooding was also applied in fields characterized by permeabilities within the range of 100–500 mD. Matzen in Austria, Carmopolis in Brazil, Diadema in Argentina, and Kalamkas in Kazakhstan provide some good examples.…”
