Results of treatment of non seminomatous germ cell tumours; 122 consecutive cases in the West of Scotland, 1981-1985

Abstract: Summary Between January 1981 and December 1985, 122 patients with non-seminomatous germ cell tumours (NSGT) were seen at a regional referral centre. Of these, a total of 98 patients received chemotherapy for metastatic disease. Treatment was given within collaborative EORTC Urology group studies, all of which involved cis-platin-containing schedules. Ninety patients had tumours of testicular origin, and their 2 year actuarial survival rate is 91%; 8 had tumours of extragonadal origin and their 2 year actuarial… Show more

“…Over the past 20 years there has been a dramatic change in both the incidence of germ cell malignancy -this has risen three-fold to the current figure of 3-4 per 100,000 males per annum (Boyle et al, 1987) -and its long-term survival, which currently stands at about 85% (Graham et al, 1988). The combination of cisplatin, vinblastine and bleomycin was introduced in the 1970s for disseminated testicular teratoma, and in the 1980s etoposide was shown to be superior to vinblastine in this combination (Williams et al, 1987).…”

“…In nonseminomatous EGCT, the long-term disease free survival of patients receiving standard cisplatin containing combination chemotherapy averages 30--40% [1,4,5,14,17]; in nonseminomatous testicular GCT, the 5 yr disease free survival ranges from 60-100% depending on the tumour volume [17]. In the absence of signs of progressive disease, all residual tumour after chemo therapy comple tion should be managed by surgery.…”
