Resuscitation of Stillborn Infants by Cardiac Massage

Abstract

SUMMARY A report is given of two cases of neonatal cardiac arrest just before actual delivery in which cardiac massage had a permanent successful effect in one case and a transient effect in the other. The conditions and indications for cardiac massage in stillborn infants are discussed on the basis of a review of the literature on the aetiology, pathophysiology and prognosis of peri‐ and neonatal cardiorespiratory arrest. It appears that neonatal cardiac massage, of which only a few reports have as yet been published, is a useful resuscitative method in such cases. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG Es wird über 2 Fälle von Herzstillstand beim Neugeborenen, der unmittelbar vor der Geburt eingetreten war, berichtet. In einem Fall konnte ein bleibender Erfolg, im anderen ein vorübergehender Erfolg erzielt werden. Die Bedingungen und Indikationen für die Herzmassage bei totgeborenen Kindern werden an Hand einer Literaturübersicht über Aetiologie, Pathophysiologie und Prognose des peri‐ und neo‐natalen Herz‐ und Atemstillstandes diskutiert. Die Herzmassage am Neugeborenen, über die bisher erst in einigen Fallen berichtet wurde, scheint in diesen Fällen eine brauchbare Wiederbelebungsmethode zu sein.
