Resveratrol Alleviates Ethanol-Induced Hormonal and Metabolic Disturbances in the Rat

Abstract: Resveratrol is a polyphenol found in different plant species and having numerous health-promoting properties in animals and humans. However, its protective action against deleterious effects of ethanol is poorly elucidated. In the present study, the influence of resveratrol (10 mg/kg/day) on some hormones and metabolic parameters was determined in rats ingesting 10 % ethanol solution for two weeks. Blood levels of insulin, glucagon and adiponectin were affected by ethanol, however, resveratrol partially amelio… Show more

“…Dyslipidemia is demonstrated to be strongly associated with insulin resistance. In high‐dose ethanol‐treated rats, notably increased serum TG, TC, and LDL‐C concomitant with lower HDL‐C levels reflected the disturbance of lipid metabolism , and similarly, indices regarding insulin sensitivity manifested serious insulin resistance. As anticipated, we found that Res exhibited potent effects on improving insulin sensitivity as well as counteracting ethanol‐induced dyslipidemia and impaired glucose tolerance .…”

As anticipated, we found that Res exhibited potent effects on improving insulin sensitivity as well as counteracting ethanol‐induced dyslipidemia and impaired glucose tolerance . In our study, however, it should be noted that the long‐term beneficial effects of resveratrol were shown after 22 weeks in rats fed with 100 mg/kg·bw/day Res and 2.4 mg/kg·bw/day ethanol.…”

“…Resveratrol was demonstrated to exert, among others, anti-cancer [2], cardio-protective [3], neuro-protective [4], anti-oxidative [5], anti-obesity [6] and anti-inflammatory [7] effects. Moreover, its action in ameliorating non-alcoholic fatty liver disease [8] and ethanol-induced metabolic disturbances [9,10] has been relatively well documented. Resveratrol was also reported to promote mitochondrial biogenesis and to increase survival of animals exposed to a high-fat diet [11].…”
