Resveratrol Ameliorates the Components of Hepatic Inflammation and Apoptosis in a Rat Model of Streptozotocin‐Induced Diabetes

Abstract: Preclinical Research Trans-resveratrol has a wide range of biological effects that reflect its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anticarcinogenic and cardioprotective properties. This study was conducted to elucidate the potential role of resveratrol on hepatic inflammation and the apoptotic pathway components Bcl-2, Bax and p53 in a streptozotocin (STZ)-induced rat model of diabetes mellitus. Inflammatory and apoptotic biomarkers indicated a reduction in hepatic erythropoietin (1.26-fold) and increased asymmetr… Show more

“…These findings proposed that resveratrol may promote hepatic function affecting insulin-signaling pathway in liver, however its action on the pathway may vary between different tissues of genders and models of pathology. There is some evidence in previous studies that inhibition of inflammatory pathways by resveratrol may contribute to alleviation of hepatic injury induced by dietary fructose or streptozotocin treatment [10,25,26]. Here, reduction of hepatic levels of TNFα and IL-1β may account for attenuation of hepatic degeneration and hyperemia in male and female rats that are subjected to fructose feeding.…”

“…Various findings [7,47,48] suggest that the optimal concentration of resveratrol for anti-inflammatory action in rat models ranges from 10 to 30 mg/kg. In the past, we also performed several studies [11,40,49,50] to demonstrate that resveratrol at 10 ~ 20 mg/kg can suppress severe acute pancreatitis and reduce inflammatory injury in rats.…”

“…Apoptosis is a process that causes the activation of genes and enzymes in association with various physiological and pathological agents. Resveratrol has been shown to prevent apoptosis in the liver of rats with streptozotocin‐induced diabetes and in a CCl 4 hepatotoxicity model . Exposure to α‐AMA for 12 hr in primary dog hepatocyte cell cultures has been reported to cause a decrease in cell vitality proportional to the concentration of α‐AMA and length of exposure.…”
