Resveratrol Oligomers, Plant-Produced Natural Products With Anti-virulence and Plant Immune-Priming Roles

Abstract: Antibiotic resistance has become increasingly prevalent in the environment. Many alternative strategies have been proposed for the treatment and prevention of diverse diseases in agriculture. Among them, the modulation of bacterial virulence to bypass antibiotic resistance or boost plant innate immunity can be considered a promising drug target. Plant-produced natural products offer a broad spectrum of stereochemistry and a wide range of pharmacophores, providing a great diversity of biological activities. Her… Show more

“…It can be present in two isomeric forms; cist-and trans-, the latter being more prevalent [37]. In plants, it is produced as a protective component, where it has a role in defense against UV-related and other injuries, diseases, and pathogenic attacks [38,39].…”

“…2.2.6. Oligomerized RSV Derivatives RSV oligomerization involves the coupling of monomers via regioselective oxidative coupling (Figure 7) [146]. At least 92 RSV oligomers with biological activities that greatly depend on their molecular size have been reported, indicating that the addition of more RSV units increases the biological effectiveness and specificity of the oligomer.…”

“…110,111 Besides V. vinifera, resveratrol oligomers have been isolated from various other Vitis species and plant families such as Cyperaceae, Dipterocarpaceae, Fabiaceae, Gnetaceae, and Paeoniaceae. [112][113][114] Resveratrol oligomers have been found to interfere with the type III secretion system (T3SS) of various human and plant pathogens. 115,116 The T3SS system is a needlelike structure in Gram-negative bacteria that allows the bacteria to penetrate host cell membranes and transfer various substrates.…”
