Retained primitive reflexes: Perceptions of parents who have used Rhythmic Movement Training with their children

Abstract: This article reports on a qualitative phenomenological research project that investigated the use of Rhythmic Movement Training (RMT) as an intervention for retained primitive reflexes. Participants were from seven families who each had a child between the ages of 7 years and 12 years. Through semi-structured interviews, parents described their reasons for seeking additional help with their child's development issues. They talked about finding RMT, using RMT within their family routine and their views on the c… Show more

“…Even if kinematic parameters are explored in some studies, the symmetry index of pelvis motion has not been found by authors so far. The impact of primitive reflexes on a child’s life is still being checked by different kinds of researchers in different disciplines such as psychology, pedagogy, and physiotherapy, where some interventions are being undertaken [ 38 , 39 , 40 , 41 , 42 , 43 ]. This demonstrates the importance of cooperation for child integral understanding and support.…”

“…In addition, these authors conducted a second study in which they observed the occurrence of APR in healthy children aged 4-6 years and analyzed its impact on psychomotor development. Similarly, Grigg et al [18] examined APR in children from 7 to 12 years old by means of rhythmic therapy and found that cervical asymmetric APR was associated with behavioral problems. Thus, we agree with these authors affirming that after the age of abolition (up to 2 years old), APR persist in children after 3 years old, altering their neurodevelopmental skills even if they are within the group of children classified as normal.…”

“…There is broad evidence that primary reflex activity can exist in the general population (Demiy et al, 2020;Gieysztor, Sadowska & Choińska, 2017;Gieysztor et al, 2018;Gieysztor et al, 2020;Grigg, Fox-Turnbull & Culpan, 2018;Hickey & Feldhacker, 2021;Matuszkiewicz, & Ga lkowski,2021;Pecuch et al, 2020;Rashikj-Canevska & Mihajlovska, 2019). Plentiful research has been conducted in children with several difficulties (Bilbilaj et al, 2017;Chinello, Gangi &Valenza, 2018;Konicarova et al, 2013;Mc Phillips & Jordan-Black, 2007;Pecuch et al, 2018, Taylor, Houghton & Chapman, 2004.…”
