Retention, Accumulation, and Movement of Phosphorus in a Mollisol Soil Irrigated With Dairy Effluent in a Tropical Environment

Abstract: Dairy operations generate large quantities of effluent, which are stored in constructed lagoons. Lagoons, however, have finite storage capacity and can overflow, potentially polluting land and associated water bodies. Alternative uses of effluent are, therefore, needed for a more sustainable and environment-friendly dairy production. This study assesses the effects of effluent irrigation on the retention, accumulation, and movement of phosphorus. Four grassesVBana (Pennisetum purpureum K. Schumach.), Californi… Show more

“…One potential candidate species is napiergrass, a warm-season perennial C4 grass of African origin that produces high biomass yields under tropical conditions. In recent studies, napiergrass produced more than 45 Mg dry wt ha −1 year −1 in Florida [ 30 ] and between 40 and 53 Mg dry wt ha −1 year −1 in Hawaii [ 31 , 32 ]. In contrast to sugarcane production in Hawaii, napiergrass is a ratoon-harvested crop that maintains high yields with zero-tillage management and no pre-harvest burning.…”

“…Tropical sugarcane dry biomass yields may range from 25.9 Mg ha -1 yr -1 in Brazil to 40 Mg ha -1 year -1 in Hawaii [12,13]. Napiergrass, another African origin warm-season perennial grass has been found to produce more than 45 Mg ha -1 year -1 in Florida and, similarly, between 40 and 53 Mg ha -1 year -1 in Hawaii [7,14,15]. However, under optimal conditions dry matter yields as high as 88 Mg ha -1 year -1 have been recorded in El Salvador [7,16].…”

“…The experimental site was in Waianae (21°26′N/158°10′W), O’ahu, Hawaii, with a mean elevation of 2·4 m above sea level and average monthly ET p ranging from 5 to 21 mm d −1 , varying with season. Rainfall is very low (150 mm annually), and the ET p is, thus, high compared with other locations on the island (Valencia‐Gica et al. , 2010).…”

“…The number of replications was limited by land availability and to provide more robust data on repeated measurement of forage and soil properties over time. Additional information on experimental design and properties of dairy effluent was presented in an associated article (Valencia‐Gica et al. , 2010).…”
