Rethinking urban green infrastructure and ecosystem services from the perspective of sub-Saharan African cities

Abstract: providing relevant details, so we can investigate your claim. context-specific conceptual, theoretical and empirical foundations is a problem which must be addressed. Drawing on papers from a Special Issue centred on urban green infrastructure and urban ecosystem services in sub-Saharan Africa, we consider what concepts and frameworks are in use and what needs to be considered when framing future research. We also synthesise key messages from the Special Issue and draw together themes to help create a new rese… Show more

“…Concepts for urban GI are currently experiencing a 'comeback' and are increasingly finding their way back into urban planning and management, also in sub-Saharan Africa (see for example [100,101]). Urban GI and its ecosystem services are often framed from a predominantly Western urban perspective and its related specific social, economic and environmental challenges [102] (p. 328). “…The importance of ecosystem services (sensu MEA [1]) generated and used in urban areas is increasingly being recognized [2][3][4], setting the foundation for a revolution in the manner in which sustainable cities are conceptualized and designed [5,6]. Urban dwellers are as dependent on ecosystem services as their rural counterparts, although the origin of many of the services that they consume is often spatially divorced from their immediate surroundings.…”
