Retiform uterine tumours resembling ovarian sex cord tumours. A comparative immunohistochemical study with retiform structures of the female genital tract

Abstract: RUTROSCTs have benign behaviour but may be confused with various uterine adenocarcinomas or metastases. Correct diagnosis should avoid overtreatment. The immunophenotype of retiform areas is similar to that of adult rete ovarii and RWAT with minor divergence from ORSLCT.

“…Sir : We read with interest the study of retiform uterine tumour resembling ovarian sex‐cord tumour (UTROSCT) by Nogales et al. 1 in a recent issue of Histopathology . Surprisingly for us, myoid differentiation was not found in these tumours by the authors and they compared the immunophenotype of the tumours to that of mesonephric remnants.…”

“…Endometriod carcinomas can be differentiated from UTROSCT on microscopic examination because the retiform spaces of this malignancy are characterized by mitoses and nuclear atypia, and these do not show immunoreactivity for sex cord markers, but diffuse positivity for epithelial markers such as EMA and cytokeratin 7 (34). Uterine mesonephric carcinoma is a very rare neoplasm described in the uterine corpus only twice, by Ordi et al (35) and by Bague´et al (36).…”

“…Sir : I would like to thank Dr Zamecnik and coworkers for their interest in our recent publication 1 . We understand their surprise at the absence of myoid differentiation in any of the retiform areas of our six cases of uterine tumours resembling ovarian sex‐cord tumours (UTROSCTs), compared with their positive findings in two of their cases 2,3 .…”
