Retinal Temperature Determination Based on Photopic Porcine Electroretinogram

Abstract: Subthreshold retinal laser therapy (SLT) is a treatment modality where the temperature of the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) is briefly elevated to trigger the therapeutic benefits of sublethal heat shock. However, the temperature elevation induced by a laser exposure varies between patients due to individual differences in RPE pigmentation and choroidal perfusion. This study describes an electroretinography (ERG)-based method for controlling the temperature elevation during SLT. Methods: The temperature dep… Show more

“…However, the therapeutic temperature window for subthreshold heat shock is narrow and requires accurate temperature control of the RPE during heating [ 26 ]. This may be achieved by the retinal temperature determination method developed in the research group of Koskelainen [ 65 , 66 , 67 ], thereby counteracting the progress of age-related macular degeneration.…”

“…The temperature determination algorithm, shown in Eq. 2 and described with further detail in (Kaikkonen et al ., 2021), takes two ERG responses f 1 ( t ) and f 2 ( t ) as inputs, with t = 0 set to the moment of the flash stimulus, and determines the difference in retinal temperature Δ T between two ERG responses. A value of 3.7 %/ °C was used for the temperature dependence of kinetics acceleration, as determined for pig cones with similar stimulus-background illumination contrast in (Kaikkonen et al ., 2021, their Fig.…”
