“…When the disease is diagnosed in its early intraocular stages, as is usually the case in developed countries, the probability of disease-free survival has been greater than 80-90% for decades [1,2]. These encouraging survival figures are not the result of the use of sophisticated treatments since enucleation of the affected eye, a simple surgical procedure, is usually curative in cases of intraocular retinoblastoma.…”

“…[7][8][9] Early diagnosis campaigns are probably the solution. [18,19] Parents should be taught to look for the presence of a red reflex of the eye by taking a flash photograph of their children younger than 1 year of age and to report the absence of this reflex, or the presence of any white spot in the eye, at the nearest primary care facility, which may improve early diagnosis. Healthcare workers also need training to increase their awareness that leucocoria in a young child is probably due to RB, and refer these patients urgently to a tertiary healthcare facility for further management.…”

“…More than 95% of affected children in industrialized countries survive, 1 and the most likely explanation for these excellent results is early diagnosis, which is determined by adequate access to health care and early consultation with specialists that lead to the detection of the disease well before it disseminates outside the eye. Metastatic retinoblastoma at presentation is, therefore, uncommon in the most developed countries, but it is still the major cause of mortality of retinoblastoma in less developed countries.…”
