Retinoid stability and degradation kinetics in commercial cosmetic products

Abstract: The term retinoid refers to retinol and its analogues, as well as carotenoids with vitamin A activity (beta-carotene). In addition to the many different functions in the human body, retinoids also have various beneficial effects on the skin. Topical retinoids are effective in the treatment of acne, psoriasis, hyperpigmentation, photoaged or intrinsically aged skin, and dyschromia and are thus utilized in cosmetology and dermatology. 1 However, two main issues are limiting the widespread use of topical retinoid… Show more

“…The need for stabilization of retinol formulations is well known because of its sensitivity to light, oxygen, heat, and heavy metals [ 80 , 92 ]. A recent study that evaluated the stability of 12 commercially available products with declared retinoids confirmed the instability of retinoids in almost all cosmetic products by long-term and accelerated stability testing [ 92 ].…”

“…No significant decomposition is measured. [43][44][45] The experiments showed that addition of the nanoparticles, of Ca-polyP-NP with embedded tretinoin, to the virus-mimicking liposomes causes a destruction/fragmentation of the envelope protein supplemented liposomes.…”

“…Another major factor affecting retinol degradation is light (Failloux et al, 2004;Temova Rakuša et al, 2021). To reduce the light-induced degradation of retinol, we examined the effect of light supply during flask fermentations.…”
