RETRACTED ARTICLE: Qualitative analysis on the driving force behind upcycling practices associated with mobile applications: Circular economy perspective

Abstract: Upcycling is a type of practice included within the circular economy. Although interest in this type of activity has grown in recent years, academic analysis of the drivers that impel these activities is poorly developed. This work focuses on upcycling activities developed in the context of rural tourism. Through field work based on structured interviews applied in the region of Andalusia (Spain), evidence was sought about the drivers that promote this type of practice. In particular, attention was paid to the… Show more

“…The rise of sharing‐based practices, such as Uber, and Airbnb, exemplifies the shifting preferences of consumers from ownership‐based consumption towards liquid consumption. The practice of shared consumption is linked with environmental sustainability for its potential to reduce resource redundancy in the system, thereby achieving reduced resource exploitation (less production) and waste generation (multiple users with increased product life cycle) (Benkler, 2004; Cherry & Pidgeon, 2018; Martín et al, 2022). Facilitated by digital platforms, a product of technological advancements, this new socio‐economic phenomenon is grounded on the principle of idle‐capacity utilization of resources (Belk, 2014; Martín et al, 2022; Park & Armstrong, 2017).…”

“…Waste generation has increased significantly in recent years in relation to consumer patterns, activities and lifestyles. Therefore, waste management is of great environmental value (Martín Martín et al 2022 ). Inappropriate waste generation has negative environmental, social and economic impacts in terms of damage to biodiversity and pollution, human health problems and the costs involved, respectively.…”

“…Products have a longer lifetime, new applications and are reintroduced into the production system, closing the loop. The social aspect is fundamental to this, and coordination and cooperation with suppliers and customers must be facilitated (Martín Martín et al 2022 ). In addition, making this new paradigm shift requires a new behavioural and cultural framework.…”

“…In addition, the concept of SC is closely associated with environmental sustainability as it can potentially decrease the exploitation of resources by minimizing the redundancy of resources in the system (Benkler, 2004). Shared use of products extends the product life cycle and contributes to minimizing waste (Martin, 2016; Martín et al, 2022; Ritter & Schanz, 2019). However, there is no unanimity in the sharing literature on the impact of environmental factors on SC intention (Minami et al, 2021; Roos & Hahn, 2019).…”
