RETRACTED: Astragali Radix Isoflavones Synergistically Alleviate Cerebral Ischemia and Reperfusion Injury Via Activating Estrogen Receptor-PI3K-Akt Signaling Pathway

Abstract: Isoflavones are major neuroprotective components of a medicinal herb Astragali Radix, against cerebral ischemia-reperfusion injury but the mechanisms of neuroprotection remain unclear. Calycosin and formononetin are two major AR isoflavones while daidzein is the metabolite of formononetin after absorption. Herein, we aim to investigate the synergistic neuroprotective effects of those isoflavones of Astragali Radix against cerebral ischemia-reperfusion injury. Calycosin, formononetin and daidzein were organized… Show more

“…Calycosin-7-O-β-D-glucoside and calycosin can scavenge nitro-oxide, resulting in tissue damage in the cerebral I/R injury rat model (Fu S. et al, 2014). Moreover, studies have shown that these isoflavones have neuroprotective effects that may involve the phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase-Akt signaling pathway (Jiang et al, 2015;Gu et al, 2021).…”

“…Formononetin had a greater effect on GSH-Px and GSH, while calycosin had a greater effect on SOD ( Yu et al, 2009 ). Recently, another study investigated the beneficial effects of formononetin, daidzein (the metabolite of formononetin) and calycosin (another major isoflavone from Astragali Radix ) in cerebral ischemia-reperfusion injury ( Gu et al, 2021 ). The results showed that they protected the primary cultured neurons against oxygen-glucose deprivation plus reoxygenation (OGD/RO) or L-glutamate treatment with an efficacy order: daidzein > formononetin > calycosin ( Gu et al, 2021 ).…”

“…Isoflavonoids may alter endogenous estrogens metabolism and may have antiproliferative and anti-breast-cancer effects. Studies have shown that a diet high in isoflavonoids can delay the development of prostate cancer and can improve postmenopausal symptoms such as flushing and headaches [ 8 , 9 ].…”
