RETRACTED: Eye-related Quality of Life and Motor Skills in Children with Glaucoma

Abstract

Purpose To investigated eye-related quality of life (Qol), parental concerns and motor skills in children with glaucoma (CG). Methods Cross-sectional observation study. 22 CG, 22 children with amblyopia (CA), 47 control aged 5–10 years, and parents were enrolled. Parents completed the Pediatric Eye Questionnaire (PedEyeQ): Proxy and Parent components. Children completed the Manual Dexterity and Aiming and Catching Scales of Movement Assessment Battery for Children's 2nd (MABC-2) to assess motor skills, including Manual Dexterity, Aiming and Catching, and Balance. Results For CG, Proxy and Parent PedEyeQ scores were significantly lower across all domains than controls (P < 0.01), and Parent PedEyeQ scores were significantly lower in Worry about Child's Eye Condition and Worry about Child's Self-perception/Interactions domains than CA (P = 0.048 and P = 0.006). The motor skills in CG were significantly worse than controls (Manual Dexterity, Aiming and Catching, and Balance: P = 0.033, P < 0.001, and P = 0.001, respectively), and comparable with CA (all P > 0.05). The competence of balance in CA was significantly worse than control (P = 0.041). Higher competence of Manual Dexterity and Balance were significantly correlated with better acuity of better-seeing eye (r=-0.611, P = 0.003; and r=-0.702, P < 0.001). Conclusions Glaucoma impairs children's Qol, and motor skills and causes parental worry, especially about the child's eye condition, development of self-perception, and social interactions.
