RETRACTED: Novel Insights Into the Role of Mitochondria-Derived Peptides in Myocardial Infarction

Abstract: Mitochondria-derived peptides (MDPs) are a new class of bioactive peptides encoded by small open reading frames (sORFs) within known mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) genes. MDPs may affect the expression of nuclear genes and play cytoprotective roles against chronic and age-related diseases by maintaining mitochondrial function and cell viability in the face of metabolic stress and cytotoxic insults. In this review, we summarize clinical and experimental findings indicating that MDPs act as local and systemic regulat… Show more

“…Exogenously administered HNG increased cardiomyocyte survival and inhibited apoptosis. Thummasorn et al found that HNG treatment decreased cardiac arrhythmias and infarct size and improved the function of the left ventricle during MI-R [ 68 , 69 , 70 ]. The authors showed that HNG treatment enhanced cardiac mitochondrial function and decreased the mitochondrial ROS level in cardiac cells.…”

“…HN, a 24 amino-acid residues peptide [ 60 ], is similar in size and structure to melittin. HN counteracts the mitochondrial dysfunction in cardiac tissue by stabilizing the mitochondrial membrane potential, mitochondrial structure and ATP levels [ 61 ]—presumably through affecting the mitochondrial membrane lipid phase via an unknown mechanism [ 62 , 63 , 64 ]. Thus, it is possible to suggest that bee venom melittin evolved similarly to cobra venom CTs from endogenous cationic peptides which regulate the activities of membrane-associated proteins via the modulation of the lipid phase polymorphism of membranes.…”

“…MO peptides are organ-specific extracts that are aimed at revitalizing and rejuvenating mitochondrial activity, thereby regenerating cells and organisms. Unlike NOPs, MOs are larger in size and have predominantly mitochondriaspecific functions that allows for a more pronounced revitalization of mitochondrial function [11,12].…”
