Retraction Note to: Randomized controlled trial testing weight loss and abdominal obesity outcomes of moxibustion

Abstract: The Editors-in-Chief have retracted this article [1] because, after publication, concerns were raised regarding the study design and statistical analysis. Post-publication review has confirmed firstly that within-group changes were highlighted rather than betweengroup differences as appropriate for a randomized trial, and secondly that there are baseline differences between the groups that exist despite randomization for which analyses were not controlled.

“…The severity of the error, ranging from invalidating the conclusions [152] to simply requiring clarification, means that different considerations exist for each type of error. For example, some invalidating errors are consequent to the design and cannot be fixed, and retractions have been issued [29,153,154]. For other examples such as PREDIMED, for which errors in randomization required a reanalysis as a quasi-experimental design, the reanalysis, retraction, and republication serve as an important example of scientific questioning and transparency of research methods [155].…”

“…Use of statistical principles to examine the likelihood that randomization was properly implemented has flagged other studies related to nutrition and obesity, too [25][26][27][28]. In at least four cases, publications were retracted [22,26,29,30].…”

“…Moxibustion, as a green therapy for weight loss because of its safe operation, outstanding curative effect, low cost, and good patient compliance, has become a popular treatment option for obese patients in recent years. Numerous studies indicate that moxibustion is efficient in relieving menopausal symptoms by enhancing the immune system and altering the amounts of neurotransmitters in the central nervous system through repeatedly stimulating acupoints [18,19]. As far as we know, by applying moxa to warm acupoints and body areas, moxibustion can promote a smoother flow of qi and blood in the human body [20].…”

“…A number of studies have demonstrated that moxibustion is effective in enhancing the immune system, and modifying neurotransmitter levels of central nervous system through repeated acupoint stimulation. [ 16 , 17 ] Studies have shown that moxibustion induces a smoother flow of qi and blood in the human body by using moxa to warm acupoints and body regions, accelerates the blood circulation overall, thereby achieving the effects of disease prevention and health care. [ 18 ] Moxibustion can be applied to patients indirectly (placing a medium between the skin and the burning moxa) or directly (placing burn cones directly onto the skin).…”
