Retrieval of GammaCell 220 irradiator isodose curves with MCNP simulations and experimental measurements

Abstract: Gamma irradiator facilities can be used in a wide range of applications such as biological and chemical researches, sterilization of medical devices and products. Dose mapping must be performed in these equipments in order to establish plant operational parameters, as dose uniformity, source utilization efficiency and maximum and minimum dose positions. The isodoses curves are measured using dosimeters or computer simulations. This work evaluates the absorbed dose in the CDTN/CNEN GammaCell Irradiation Facilit… Show more

“…Following Rodrigues et al . 29 , aluminum and steel shells of 2 mm thickness each were implemented between the sources and the exposure chamber. The 60 Co emission spectrum was simplified to consist of two 1.25 MeV γ-rays.…”

“…One of the additional PMMA slabs of the phantom was modified to fit four alanine pellets placed with center in the corners of a 1 cm × 1 cm square in a 2.5 cm diameter circular ABS holder (see Figure 2 Cobalt-60 reference irradiations are carried out in a Gammacell -a shielded enclosure, with a number of cylindrical cobalt-60 source pencils arranged around the sample at an approximate radial distance of 10 cm and which have an approximate height of 20 cm. The irradiator is very similar to the Nordion GC-220 in design (Hefne, 2000;Rodrigues et al, 2009). The standard ABS holder containing four alanine pellets is placed inside polyether ether ketone (PEEK, C 19 H 12 O 3 ) cylinders inside an aluminium can which is able to have its temperature controlled, which is all placed at the sample position.…”
