Retrieval of Migrated Coils with Stent Retrievers: An Animal Study

Abstract: BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE:Coil migration is a potentially serious complication of endovascular aneurysm treatment. The aim of the study was to systematically investigate the effectiveness of coil retrieval with a stent retriever in an animal model.

“…Dedicated rescue devices, such as Microsnares and the ARD, have been available for some time and have even been used for mechanical thrombectomy [26,27] prior to the era of stent-retriever thrombectomy. The most experiences using Microsnares and the ARD have been reported in the rescue of neurovascular devices, such as coils [12][13][14][15] and stents [16,17,28]. In the present study, the Microsnare as well as the ARD were able to achieve a successful rescue of larger WEBs in 100% (16 of 16 cases).…”

“…Dislocation and migration of WEBs are isolated complications that have only been reported twice [10,11]. Many different endovascular bail-out techniques, using a variety of strategies and equipment have been described for rescuing other devices, such as coils and stents [12][13][14][15][16][17]. A systematic rescue approach of migrated WEBs has not been investigated so far.…”

“…All experiments were performed in 2 female Landrace swine (average weight, 58 kg) with peri-and intrainterventional management as reported previously. 13 The experiments were performed in accordance with the German legislation governing animal studies following the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals (National Research Council, 8th ed, 2011) and the "Directive 2010/63/EU on the Protection of Animals Used for Scientific Purposes" (Official Journal of the European Union, 2010). Official permission was granted from the governmental animal care and use office (Landesamt für Natur, Umwelt und Verbraucherschutz Nordrhein-Westfalen, Recklinghausen, Germany).…”

“…As a result, coil retrieval was successful in 11% of specimens in the standard thrombectomy group and 99% of specimens in the advanced coil-retrieval group. 17) To our knowledge, there were two patients in whom coil retrieval using a method similar to the advanced coil-retrieval technique was successful. 16,18) Further investigation may be necessary.…”
