Retrieval practice and spaced learning: preventing loss of knowledge in Dutch medical sciences students in an ecologically valid setting

Abstract: Introduction Knowledge, once acquired, degrades over time. Exams that contain questions related to previously acquired knowledge (‘retrieval practice questions’) may promote retrieval practice and spaced learning, and subsequently prevent knowledge loss. To investigate this hypothesis, we compare the score of retrieval practice questions to regular questions in exams of a two-year (bio)medical study program. Methods The two-year “Mechanisms of Heal… Show more

“…The closest comparison to this work in terms of scope and principle comes from a 2022 paper out of the Netherlands [ 15 ], wherein previously tested content was incorporated into each major block exam as students progressed. Overall, the comprehensive aforementioned study with a dataset spanning five years showed time-spaced repetition mitigates loss of medical knowledge, but too much emphasis on reviewing past material may slightly lower overall scores when tested on both new and old material simultaneously.…”

“…This method boasts several advantages, including reducing learner distraction by introducing breaks and spacing between sessions, making it ideal for comprehending complex concepts by allowing learners to digest information before proceeding to the next segment. Additionally, each session concludes with a recap of the material covered, fortifying retention [ 19 – 21 ].…”
