Retrograde tube drainage for esophageal anastomotic leaks and perforation

Abstract: The mortality and morbidity of esophageal anastomotic leaks or perforations remain high. We performed retrograde transanastomotic esophageal sump tube drainages for esophageal anastomotic leak or perforation in three patients. Our method is a modified procedure of the T-tube drainage. The Levin gastric tube was simply inserted into the esophagus via anastomotic leak or perforation to develop a defined fistula. All three patients were treated with a satisfactory outcome. An advantage of this method is that it i… Show more

“…There are few reports in the literature describing similar maneuvers. Notably, Tomita et al [12] describe the successful use of this method in the treatment of three patients with anastomotic leaks after esophageal resection or perforation, inserting a drainage tube in the esophagus through the perforation or the leak in order to create a controllable fistula. Similar principles are present in an article by Gauderer et al [13] where they describe transanastomotic drainage tubes inserted distally for the treatment of esophageal fistula in children with esophageal atresia.…”

“…Elevated WBC count has been shown to be associated with increased risks of the lung (19) , gastric (22) , and colorectal (23) cancers. leukocytosis is associated with thrombocytosis which is negative prognostic indicator in patients with cancer (50)(51) .Thrombocytosis is associated with a poor cancer prognosis, suggesting a potential role for platelets in the pathogenesis of the disease (28) .…”
