Retroperitoneal schwannoma: Uncommon location of a benign tumor

Abstract: Schwannoma is a type of nerve tumor of the nerve sheath. They are preferentially localized on the head, neck, and flexor surfaces of the extremities. Retroperitoneal schwannoma is extremely rare. The diagnosis is uncommon and based on the anatomopathological and immunochemistry examination of the surgical specimen. We herein report an uncommon location of schwannoma treated with conventional surgery in a 53‐year‐old female patient admitted to our department for chronic abdominal pain. Retroperitoneal schwannom… Show more

“…Schwannomas pélvicos são raros e originam-se da bainha mielina de nervos periféricos do nervo sacral ou do plexo hipogástrico. 5,7 Geralmente, apresentamse como massas isoladas de pequeno tamanho, contudo, raros casos de schwannomas gigantes já foram relatados. Eles são tumores localmente invasivos para os órgãos adjacentes, produzindo sintomas inespecíficos em caso de compressão.…”

“…Schwannomas are usually benign and solitary tumors. Malignant transformation is exceptional unless associated with type 2 neurofibromatosis, which accounts for 60% of the cases [1 , 2] .…”

“…Schwannomas are typically benign tumors that originate from the Schwann cells of the nerve sheath. These neoplasms usually affect the nerves in the head, neck, and flexor surfaces of the extremities [1] . Retroperitoneal location is infrequent and accounts for approximately 3% of all schwannomas [2] .…”

“…Retroperitoneal schwannomas are rare and account for <3% of all schwannomas. [ 1 , 2 ] Moreover, the incidence of a schwannoma within the psoas muscle is a rare phenomenon; few cases have been reported. [ 3 ] The surgical approach to removing a schwannoma in the psoas muscle is challenging because of the potential injury that can be caused to the lumbar plexus due to its anatomical proximity.…”
