Retroperitoneoscopic Excision of a Mesenteric Cyst

Abstract: Mesenteric cysts are rare intra-abdominal lesions. We present a case of a mesenteric cyst that was discovered by abdominal computed tomography (CT) and excised by retroperitoneoscopic surgery. There have been 10 reports of excision of mesenteric cysts by laparoscopy in the literature, but retroperitoneoscopic resection of such cysts has not been reported. This case suggests that when a mesenteric cyst arises from the ascending or descending colon, the retroperitoneal approach has a lower risk of traumatizing t… Show more

“…Others have described partial aspiration in vivo to aid in manipulation of the cyst during dissection, as well as retroperitoneal excision of cysts that are within the ascending or descending colonic mesentery. 4 None of the reported cases of laparoscopic excision of mesenteric cysts have reported any adverse outcomes specific to the laparoscopic approach. Given the advantages of decreased patient morbidity associated with the laparoscopic approach it should be the procedure of choice for any experienced laparoscopist.…”
