Retroperitoneoscopy in the horse: Anatomical study of the retroperitoneal perirenal space and description of a surgical approach

Abstract: Background Surgical approaches to the kidneys and perirenal structures are uncommonly performed in horses and several complications have been described with the current procedures. Objective To describe the anatomy of the retroperitoneal perirenal space and investigate a retroperitoneal minimally invasive approach to access the kidney and perirenal structures in horses. Study design Descriptive, cadaveric study. Methods Anatomical description of the retroperitoneal space was performed on three equine cadavers … Show more

“…Clinical and clinicopathological abnormalities are directly related to the excess production and secretion of catecholamines, and the potent α‐adrenergic and β‐adrenergic activation. In humans and dogs, measurement of urine and plasma‐free metanephrines and normetanephrines is well‐described, and offers excellent sensitivity and specificity when values are ≥4 times above the reference limit 10,17,18 . However, the same data and reference ranges have not been established for horses.…”

“…The procedure was performed in standing position in all specimens. For this purpose, horses were suspended using the same technique described by Pujol and collaborators in 2021 3 . Eight ropes were passed along the vertebral column under the nuchal ligament at the proximal, mid and caudal cervical area (3 ropes) and under the supra spinous ligament from the withers to the sacrum (5 ropes).…”

“…The retroperitoneum is a virtual space located between the transversalis fascia and the parietal peritoneum from the diaphragm to the pelvic wall. Several anatomical structures are located entirely (kidneys) or partially (bladder, rectum, vagina) in this space 1–3 . Recently, the anatomy and surgical approach of the perirenal space have been described in horses 3 .…”

“…Surgical approaches to the kidneys and perirenal structures are uncommonly performed in horses and several complications have been described with the current procedures. This descriptive cadaveric study by Raymond Pujol and colleagues in France described the anatomy of the retroperitoneal perirenal space and a subsequently developed minimally invasive surgical approach to the area in horses.…”
