Retrospective analysis of 515 cases of Crohn’s disease hospitalization in China: Nationwide study from 1990 to 2003

et al.

Abstract: This retrospective, hospital-based study shows that the number of patients with Crohn's disease in China has steadily increased over a period of 14 years. Further population-based epidemiological studies specifically focusing on risk factors are needed. The diagnosis of Crohn's disease and therapeutic strategy require improvement.

“…The young age of our patients is in consonance with the fact that CD is predominantly diagnosed in late adolescence or early adulthood [2]. The overwhelming male preponderance, though not seen in the West [2,[21][22][23][24], can either be due to India's being a low-incidence country [2], like Greece [25] or China [18], or represent a socio-referral bias where women and girls are under-represented in seeking medical attention.…”

“…The cardinal presenting features of CD in our study were not different from those described in the West or in China [18,28]. However, there was an over-representation of complicated disease (Montreal B2/B3) in comparison with that of a similar hospital-based population in the West [29] or China [18].…”

“…The duodenal mucosal histology in patients with celiac disease was graded using the Marsh-Oberhuber scheme [29]. Crohn's disease was diagnosed using a combination of endoscopic, radiological, histological features, and response to treatment [30]. Patients with malabsorption of two or more substances (abnormal urine xylose test, reduced serum B12 level, increased stool 72 h fat) when other known causes have been excluded, were diagnosed to have tropical sprue [31].…”
