Retrospective analysis of 95 patients with large vessel vasculitis: a single center experience

Abstract: Aim: Although Takayasu arteritis (TAK) and giant cell arteritis (GCA) have been considered as distinct disease entities, similarities of these diseases have been recently reported. However, little data is available regarding this issue in Japanese patients with TAK and GCA. In addition, the classification criteria for TAK established in 1990 by the American College of Rheumatology (ACR) have been criticized due to the age restriction for disease onset (≤ 40 years). Thus, we aimed to compare the clinical charac… Show more

“…Statistical analysis was performed using Graph Pad Prism 5 (San Diego, CA, USA) and EZR software (Kanda 2013), as previously described (Ishizuka et al 2016;Yoshida et al 2016). The Fisher's exact test was used for binary data, and the Mann-Whitney U-test was used for continuous data.…”

“…The Fisher's exact test was used for binary data, and the Mann-Whitney U-test was used for continuous data, as previously described (Tomiyama et al 2016). The Kaplan-Meier method was used to estimate the retention rate of ABT, and the log-rank test was used to calculate p values (Ishizuka et al 2016;Yoshida et al 2016). Multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to identify factors that were associated with discontinuation of ABT.…”

“…GCA on the other hand has an estimated incidence of about 10–32 per 100 000 people ≥ 50 years old . The geographic differences are also apparent; GCA is much more common in Europe and North America and very uncommon in countries like India and Japan, while TAK is more common in Asia and Turkey …”

“…In the studies that have compared the patients who are > 40 years to those who are < 40 years, the clinical manifestations and imaging findings of both groups of patients classified as TAK are similar . In one multi‐ethnic cohort of patients with TAK, a greater proportion of patients with TAK > 40 years were White than non‐White .…”
