Retrospective Analysis of Land Cover and Use Dynamics in Gilgel Abbay Watershed by Using GIS and Remote Sensing Techniques, Northwestern Ethiopia

Abstract: This study was aimed at examining land cover changes for the last 35 years and its causative factors in Gilgel Abbay watershed by using GIS and remote sensing, survey and population data. The land use and cover changes study will help to apply the appropriate land use. The land cover/use status for the years 1973, 1986, 1995 and 2008 were examined using land sat images. The changes in different land cover units such as forest, wood and bush lands, grass, wetlands and water bodies, and farm and settlements wer… Show more

“…The accuracy assessment measures how many ground truth pixels were classified correctly. Accurate information on land use land cover changes and the forces and processes behind is essential for designing sound environmental policies and management (Minale, 2013). Accuracy assessment is very important for understanding the classification results and employing these results for decision-making (Lu et al, 2003).In this study, the classification accuracy for recent LUCC map was carried out using ground control points from field observations as the major sources of reference data and set of reference points.…”

“…The pattern of national development shows changes in land use planning which causes a reduction in the area of open spaces or green land cover. The uncontrolled land conversion beyond their carrying capacity can threaten sustainability of natural environment, agriculture production, food security and cause socio-economic losses [3]; [4]; [5]; [6]; [7]; 8]; [9].…”

“…Cyprus papyrus, the characteristic plant species of the wetlands, has dramatically declined, with even local extinctions in some areas [38]. Consequently, many wetlands in the lake catchment are shrinking at a drastic rate [43,[56][57][58], (Table 2). This is an indication that the wetlands in the lake catchment are not wisely utilized in line with the Ramsar Convention.…”
