Retrospective reports of college students' childhood problems

Abstract: College students and a subsample of their mothers and fathers participated in a study examining their retrospective reports of childhood emotional and behavioral problems experienced by college students. College students and their mothers and fathers exhibited moderate correspondence in their recollection of internalizing and externalizing problems that college students experienced during their childhood. In contrast, college students tended to endorse significantly greater levels of both internalizing and ext… Show more

“…Our retrospective measures of childhood parenting and early childhood psychological tendencies proved to be significantly related to one another and predictive of Block and Block (2006) and Feld (1995), as well as findings in related retrospective studies (e.g., Heer 2008;Klein et al 1996;Renk et al 2005). Parenting styles appear linked to early childhood psychological tendencies in predictable directions: authoritative parenting facilitates childhood confidence but authoritarian contributes to childhood dependency (Bornstein 1992).…”

“…The retrospective studies most directly linked to the focus of the current study include Heer (2008), Klein et al (1996), and Renk et al (2005). One of the salient findings of the Heer study was that authoritative parenting from both mothers and fathers predicted secure attachments in adult relationships.…”

“…However, dissociation may also be independent of CPA and other childhood traumatic experiences and events (Seligman & Kirmayer, 2008). Moreover, it is plausible that some mentally unhealthy individuals recall their childhood as worse than it really was (Renk, Roberts, Klein, Rojas-Vilches, & Sieger, 2005; Sheikh et al, 2016b). It is therefore necessary to ascertain whether the association between CPA and onset of COPD and migraine is independent of respondent’s current mood/psychological state and mental health.…”
