Retrospective Self-Reported Symptoms of Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder: Reliability of the Wender Utah Rating Scale

Abstract: We measured the internal consistency and four-week temporal consistency and temporal stability of the Wender Utah Rating Scale and its 25-item short form. The Wender scale is a rationally constructed retrospective self-report rating scale for symptoms of Attention-deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. Both scales manifested excellent internal consistency. Over one month, both versions manifested significant temporal consistency and good temporal stability in the nonclinical sample of 83 successful young adults most … Show more

“…The test-retest reliability of the WURS has been reported to be good [24], but one of the problems with the WURS is that it is not validated for patients with ASP. As, according to the DSM-IV-TR [25], ASP is always preceded by CD before the age of 15, and because of high comorbidity between CD and ADHD, it is difficult to distinguish which of the retrospectively rated symptoms in fact are associated with CD and which are markers of childhood ADHD.…”

“…WURS has been shown to be a sensitive instrument for the retrospective identification of childhood ADHD symptoms [23] with good test-retest validity in a normal population [24]. The scale contains 61 statements with a 5-point quantitative scale.…”

“…The WURS was described previously (Burton et al, 2003), but this time the abbreviated version, a 25-item subset of the WURS, was chosen to be consistent with the relatively short DSM IV inventory (Ward et al, 1993), and it also exhibits internal and temporal consistency (Rossini and O'Connor, 1995). Subjects rated themselves for each behavior on a scale of 0-4 (not at all or very slightly, score ¼ 0; mildly, score ¼ 1; moderately, score ¼ 2; quite a bit, score ¼ 3; or very much, score ¼ 4).…”
